The Amazon Basin is the world’s largest drainage system.  Its 2.7 million sq. miles (7 million sq. km) drains 40 percent of the continent of South America and constitutes almost 5 percent of the total land area of earth.

The length of the Amazon River is 42000 miles (6720 km), the longest river on earth. It has 1100 tributaries, 17 of them more than a thousand miles (1600 km) long.

The flow from the mouth of the Amazon is 2,829 million gallons (10,750 million liters) per second.  The volume of water is five times that of the Congo and 12 times that of the Mississippi.

This picture gives a little perspective on the height of some of the trees in the Amazon Rainforest.  The tropical rain forests of the world contain about half of the world's plant and animal species and produce 32 percent of the living matter on land.
